Qatar allows citizens of 80 countries visa-free entry

Qatar welcomed 944,689 visitors in the first quarter of 2018. A breakdown of arrivals by region shows positive growth in all non-GCC and non-Other Arab regions throughout the first quarter. Though these numbers are less as compared to last year. June ’18 saw a 2.3% increase in tourist compared to last year.

In August ‘17, Qatar had eased its visa policies allowing citizens of 80 countries visa-free entry. With this announcement, Qatar had become the most open country in the region in terms of a number of nationalities eligible to enter visa-free.

The greatest increases in arrival volumes in the first half of 2018 compared to 2017 came from India, Russia and Germany, up by over 33,529, 10,842, and 10,621 visitors respectively. The cruise industry has shown considerable growth during the first half of 2018. Doha port has hosted 15 ships during the first four months of ’18 carrying 47,162 passengers and crew that’s a 43% increase from H1 2017.

Qatar Tourism Authority opens representative offices abroad

The first half of 2018 saw the continuation of Qatar Tourism Authority (QTA’s) efforts to tap into new international markets with the opening of representative offices in Russia and India. Thanks to the efforts of the latter Qatar is emerging as a strong market showing potential growth for destination wedding seekers.

Moreover, the first half of ’18 saw a series of Qatar’s festivals continue to grow, attracting leisure and family visitors. These include the second edition of Shop Qatar, the ninth edition of Qatar International Food Festival and the fifth edition of Qatar Summer Festival among others.

Hotel Apartments performed well in Q1 2018, with a significant increase of 17% in occupancy rate compared to the same period in 2017. This represents a continuation of a positive trend that has been observed since the beginning of the year. Moreover, hotel demand continues to grow (+5%). This is in part supported by stronger domestic demand as well as increasing diversified visitor source markets whose travellers tend to have a longer length of stay.

It’s safe to say that as the demand grows so does the competition, and in this volatile market one must stay ahead of the curve.

Since we’re talking numbers, according to Euromonitor International customers make about 50% of their hotel bookings online, 76% of these online bookings come from Online Travel Agencies (OTAs). Euromonitor also projects the lodging and accommodations will have an 8.6% compound annual growth rate through 2020, compared with 1.2% compound annual growth for offline accommodation bookings.
